The Picker-Nanwani Prize

The Picker-Nanwani Prize was established by the South Asia International Economic Law Network (SAIELN) and sponsored by Prof. Suresh Nanwani, Professor in Practice, School of Government and International Affairs, Durham University, United Kingdom, and Prof. Colin Picker, Professor of International Law and Executive Dean, Faculty of Business Law, University of Wollongong. The Picker-Nanwani Prize is awarded to the best essay submitted for SAIELN’s Biennial Conferences.

Price for SAIELN’s Third Biennial Conference:

Congratulations to Rajeshwari Dasgupta on winning the 2022 Picker-Nanwani Prize for her innovative manuscript entitled, Women, Food Security, and the Pandemic in Peri-Urban and Rural West Bengal. Ms. Dasgupta’s article takes a social-science approach and showcases how food insecurity disproportionately affects women in rural and peri-urban areas, using semi-structured interviews to elicit thick descriptions of the difficulties facing women during COVID-19. The author masterfully shows not only the plight of women in the specific situation in West Bengal, but concludes with more generalisable recommendations.
